Aug-2022: MARS cuts EU maize yields 16% below 5-year average In the Aug-2022 issue, the EU Commission's Agrometeorological Institute (MARS) reduced the yield estimates from the previous month by a further -1.3%. Overall, grain yields are almost 4% below the 5-year average. The basis is the unfavorable climate data from July to Aug-22-2022. Large parts of Europe experienced above-average temperatures and too little rain. Compared to the 5-year average, the results remain -1.6% below the multi-year average. The completed barley harvest was able to assert itself with yields of 4.85 t/ha on a 5-year average. MARS even estimates above-average yields for rye and triticale . On the other hand, wheat yields are rated around 1% lower than the multi-year average. For corn, MARS estimates a drop in yields of -16% compared to the long-term average and around -9% compared to the previous year. For green corn, the discounts are not quite as large. In the individual EU countries , the yield estimates vary depending on regional weather conditions. In a 5-year comparison, Hungary did the worst with a drop in wheat yields of -16%, followed by Portugal with a drop of -13%. High crop losses are also recorded in Romania with -5.8% and Spain with -7.7%. France and Italy got off comparatively lightly with -2.8% . The German wheat yields are classified slightly above the 5-year average, with significant differences occurring between the individual federal states depending on the soil and precipitation conditions. Above -average yield expectations prevail in the Scandinavian and Baltic states . The cause is seen in the cooler temperatures with sufficient rainfall. In Belgium and the Netherlands , wheat yields are also estimated to be above average in the lowlands. In contrast, the corn estimates in some countries are catastrophic. In a multi-year comparison, a slump of -34% is expected in Hungary and -23% in Romania . -25% is also forecast for the Italian harvest. In Spain and France , a -11% drop in yield is expected. The German corn harvest is said to be -14% worse than in the previous year.
