COCERAL cuts EU-27 grain harvest to 264 million tons

Coceral estimates EU-27 grain harvest in 2022 lower at 264.6 million t (previous year 287.7 million t ) In 2022 , the EU-27 grain harvest 2022 to 264.6 million t reduced by around 20 million t compared to the 3rd estimate (in May 22). incl. Around 288 million t (previous year 309.5 million t) are forecast for GB. The future close trade relations with the UK suggest that the exit country should continue to be included in the considerations of market and price developments. The main reason for the currently lower figures is a yield that is around 4.4 dt/ha lower than in the previous year, despite the slightly smaller cultivation area. Weather developments, the high fertilizer and plant protection as well as energy costs are the decisive influencing factors. Compared to the 2021 harvest, a significant harvest decline of -7.1% is expected. The result falls into the lower average range. With lower feed consumption as a result of reduced animal stocks, the previously increased imports can be further reduced. Exports to third countries will increase significantly in view of the high world market prices and favorable euro exchange rates. There are different developments in the individual Member States. In the west and south as well as in the south-east of the EU there have been significant harvest losses due to drought. Average yields per hectare have fallen between 20 and 30% in these regions. After last year's record harvest with maximum maize yields, a comparatively high harvest reduction of -27% is predicted for Romania ; the result slips into the lower range of the 5-year average. High harvest losses of -36% are also expected for Hungary due to yields; the previous year was already well below the average. After initially favorable conditions, Spain's grain production has deteriorated significantly in the end.Due to the lack of precipitation, the result is -26% worse than in the previous year. Coceral estimates Italy's grain harvest to be around -14.6% worse than in the previous year. In the EU's largest production region, France , the grain harvest is almost -10% lower due to the drought. At the same time, corn cultivation suffered the greatest drop in yields , at around -30% . The German grain harvest performed unexpectedly well with notable barley and wheat yields . However, the qualities leave a lot to be desired. Only the corn harvest will bring significant losses. Growth of 5.4% is expected for Great Britain after the barely average previous year. This means that the British will continue to be welcome wheat exporters, especially this year, with global demand increasing. There are also significant differences between the individual types of grain. The wheat harvest in the EU-27 is reduced to 125.6 million t by almost -3% compared to the previous year . With almost the same acreage, reduced yields provided the decisive effect. Coceral estimates the barley harvest of the EU-27 at 52.4 million t compared to 52 million t in the previous year. A higher acreage is only partially offset by lower yields. With less acreage, the EU-27 maize harvest of just under 52 million t is expected to fall well short of the record result of the previous year of 70 million t . The expected yields were reset from 75.5 to 58 dt/ha. However, the last word has not yet been spoken.
