COCERAL updates EU grain harvest to less than 280 million tons.

COCERAL downgrades the EU-28 grain harvest to 299.1 million tons. In its June edition, the umbrella organization of European grain and oilseed traders (COCERAL) estimates the EU-28 grain harvest to be -4% lower at 299.1 million tons compared to the previous year. With a somewhat reduced acreage, the lower yield of 54 dt / ha on average (previous year 56 dt / ha) contributes significantly to the result. Wheat production is expected to be -11.6% lower, while barley and corn are up by 2 to 3% . The results are very different in the individual regions. Great harvest losses of -24% are observed for Great Britain . The cause is equally a considerable decline in cultivation as a result of the difficult autumn order as well as weak earnings expectations. Instead of exports, GB will probably have to import more. The largest EU growing region, France, must expect a crop reduction of -9% . In particular, the wheat yields that fell by 10 dt / ha lead to this below-average result. The 2.5 million increase in corn harvest cannot compensate for the 7.5 million t decline in wheat. For the south-east European countries Romania and Bulgaria , COCERAL estimates lower results by -6.6% and 5.5 %, respectively . With a larger acreage, considerable yield reductions are expected in the prevailing maize cultivation. Italy should harvest 3.9% below the previous year's level. This increases the existing import requirement again. Difficulties are expected under corona conditions. In the Scandinavian countries, very contrasting developments can be observed. While the Swedes can expect a crop loss of - 9.9% , Finland expects an increase of 14% . After a dry previous year, Spain has good conditions for an above-average harvest with an increase of 26% this year due to a rainy spring. The usual imports are expected to drop from 16 to 12 million tons. For Germany , COCERAL estimates a small crop growth of +1.7% compared to the comparatively weak previous year. Nevertheless, the result remains below the multi-year average. The same assessment also applies to Poland with an increase of 1.3% . According to COCERAL, the harvest for the EU area without Great Britain is expected to fall by 2.2% to just under 280 million tons. This means that COCERAL is in close agreement with the forecast of the EU Commission .The recent rainfalls and the expected precipitation can improve the harvest result a little, but not much more.
