DBV estimates grain harvest to be 46.8 million t in 2019 - 2.3% below multi-year average In its most recent Aug. issue, the German Farmers Association estimates the German grain harvest at 45 million t. Although the result is significantly better than in the catastrophic previous year, it still clearly lags behind the multi-year average of -6% . With a slightly smaller acreage, the low yield per hectare averaged only 73.2 dt / ha . In the case of wheat , the harvest fell by -8.6% compared to the multi-year averages. According to DBV estimates, the decline in earnings of -7.6% contributed significantly to this while the acreage remained almost unchanged. The wheat suffered noticeably under the heat wave in June because the maturity was not yet complete. In contrast, winter barley did quite well with +8% .The acreage increased by 10% , but the yield per hectare remained almost 4% below the 5-year average. According to DBV, the positive result of the summer barley should also have been due to the larger acreage and additionally by a slight increase in yield. The rye harvest is estimated to be 9% lower. With increasing acreage, the yield (-10.5%) suffered greatly from the drought. Rye is usually found in less water-holding locations . Triticale yields a 13.6% lower harvest with significantly reduced acreage. Low cropping and low yield expectations of 4.6% suggest a maize grain harvest of just under 4.4 million tonnes. This is 6.6% less than the multi-year average.
