Market-based slaughterhouse structures

Slaughterhouse structures in Germany and France

In Germany, more than twice as many pigs are slaughtered as in France. However, there are a number of commonalities and similarities.

In both countries one is extremely strong spatial concentration on a Ballungsgebiet. In Germany, which is the Northern Münsterland region and Western Lower Saxony. Has formed a pig farming Center in Brittany in France. In both cases are in the compression areas about 50% of the pigs held.

Accordingly, the slaughter houses is also focus on these sites.

In both countries, a similar slaughterhouse structure emerged. In addition to a few large battle company with an outstanding peak operation, several medium-sized units assert themselves. A residual of approximately 25% companies covers the remaining regional or local needs.

These structures are not a product of chance, but arise from the need, that the distribution of products of battle in the area national or international depending on the degree of self-sufficiency and the population density must be done.

The vast international distribution to shouldersome a few large enterprises are able. Typical example is Denmark with a self-sufficiency rate of 650%. Danish e is the largest Danish battle company in the country with a market share of 95%. However, Danish Crown has only a carcase production capacity, which is just as high as the largest German companies.  Both companies compete on the international markets. This Danish Crown has the edge traditionally.

In Germany is the self-sufficiency to the 110%. Three very large companies deny more than 50% of the pig slaughter. The biggest German battle enterprise has a market share of 25%. Germany has the advantage of a central location in Europe with the adjacent areas of great import in the Eastern countries.  Russia not available however for the time being.

France supply situation is the 100%.  Due to its location on the edge of French pigs in relation to France itself and Europe to overcome large distances to the consumer. The largest French company has a market share of close to 20% with its 3 businesses in Brittany.

For the majority of medium-sized companies, which remains predominantly consumer supply in the area or other area a region. or the operation of niche markets with specialties.

The trend to larger units, resulting in the economies of scale. The increasing requirements in terms of consumer, animal and environmental protection work is strengthening in this direction , because larger units can better distribute additional costs.
