July 2022: MARS cuts EU wheat yields below 5-year average In its July 2022 issue, the EU Commission's Agrometeorological Institute (MARS) reduced the previous month's yield estimates for wheat by -4.9%. The basis is the unfavorable climate data from June to July 22, 2022. Large parts of Europe experienced above-average temperatures and too little rain. Compared to the 5-year average, the results remain -1.6% below the multi-year average. With yields of 4.8 t/ha, the completed barley harvest was only just able to maintain the 5-year average. MARS even estimates above-average yields for rye and triticale . In contrast, corn yields are expected to fall by almost 8%. In the individual countries , the yield estimates for wheat vary depending on the weather conditions. In a five-year comparison, Portugal is the worst performer with a drop in earnings of -13%, followed by Spain with a drop of -7.5%. High harvest losses are also forecast for Romania at -5.8% and France at -5%. Italy and Hungary are expected to experience shortfalls in wheat yields of -3.7% and 3.1% respectively. The German wheat yields are classified slightly above the 5-year average, with clear differences occurring between the individual federal states depending on the soil and precipitation conditions. Above -average yield expectations prevail in the Scandinavian and Baltic states . The cause is seen in the cooler temperatures with sufficient rainfall. In Belgium and the Netherlands , too, yields per hectare are estimated to be above average.
