MARS with 1st yield forecast for 2023 The Agricultural Meteorological Institute of the EU Commission (MARS) has published an initial forecast of possible yields per hectare in 2023 based on trend developments and evaluation of the latest climate data. Accordingly, an average EU grain yield of 5.6 t/ha or 2% more than in the previous year is expected. For wheat , MARS assumes 5.77 t/ha or an increase of 4%. Winter barley should perform at the same level as last year. On the other hand, rye and triticale are said to deliver lower yields at -2 and -1% respectively. According to the current status, rape should also not be able to repeat the good result of the previous year. In the individual EU member states, the forecasts differ depending on the initial situation. The subject of the forecasts are the probable wheat yields . Above-average results of 9 and more percent are expected - measured against the 5-year average - for Bulgaria (+10%).Estonia (+9%) Finland (+10%) Lithuania (+11%) and Slovenia due to the favorable weather development. The Czech Republic (+6%), Germany (+5%) Hungary (+6%) Italy (+5%), Lithuania (+7% Poland ( +7%) and Romania (+7%) below average in Austria (-1%), Spain (-1%), France (-1%) and the Netherlands (-1% ) Harvest is already in sight due to the severe drought in Portugal (-15%) MARS monitors the climate data month by month and will continue to publish revised forecasts as appropriate.
