MARS: EU cereal yields in 2019 in good midfield with regional deviations The Agricultural Meteorological Institute (MARS) at the EU Commission estimates its latest June issue of cereal yields to be just above the 5-year average. This resulted in the climate data analysis. The lack of precipitation in April has been compensated by abundant rainfall in the following years in the predominant growing areas. However, different conditions prevail in the individual EU growing regions. In Spain, too little rainfall and high temperatures are responsible for below-average yields. In France, Germany, Poland and the Baltic States average yields are to be assumed. For Italy too, average results are assumed after sufficient rainfall has fallen. It has been raining a lot in the southeastern European countries except Romania. The MARS experts estimate above-average yields there. In particular, rainfall benefits the summer crops such as corn and sunflowers. The exception to the good average yields is rapeseed.Yield level is 3% below the multi-year average. Unfavorable starting conditions for sowing in autumn, an unfavorable flowering period and a high level of pest infestation due to the lack of pesticides are the reasons for the below-average yield expectations. The harvest estimates of the European Commission are based on the yield data of MARS. It can therefore be assumed that the EU harvest will continue to be in the upper midfield. However, there are still some weather risks to overcome in the crucial earnings formation phase.
