Cattle count Nov. 2019: - 2% fewer pigs, -2.9% fewer sows compared to the previous year The preliminary results of the pig count in Nov 2019 showed a declining pig population of approx. 26 million animals, or approx. - 2% compared to the same date last year. Compared to the previous year, the current counting results were even 6% lower. The number of pig-keeping businesses shrank to approx. 21,000 or - 5.5% year-on-year and - 9.9% every two years. On average, every company holds approx. 1,230 pigs. Ten years ago there were only 460 pigs per owner. With 45% , the largest proportion of pig herds are fattened animals ; Breeding pigs have a share of almost 7% . The rest are piglets and young pigs . The number of sows fell by 1.2% to 1.78 million animals. 10 years ago there were 2.3 millionPiece. Depending H old today nearly 250 sows. Ten years ago, the number was 113 animals. The number of sows has decreased from 22,800 in 2009 to 7,200 today. The development is closely related to the abandonment of a large number of small family businesses, formerly a domain of sows. Fewer sows mean a decrease in the number of piglets available, despite the usual increase in the performance of the remaining dams. For 2020, with average calculation data, a net loss of approx. 300,000 piglets per year From the structure of the weight classes , the expected slaughter pigs can be estimated. In the months of January to March 2020 , slaughter animals can be expected to fall between -1.6% and -4.7% less than in the same period of the previous year. For the following period , the counting results are to be used to calculate the animal numbers from domestic production, which will remain largely the same .
