Denmark: Pork population is rising again - more than offsetting decline in 2016 - Area-based manure units are capping T he quarterly pig census in Denmark showed a rising total stock of more than 3% as of 1 Oct 2017 . The assessment based on data collection in 2,500 representative companies. This result more than compensates for the decline in 2016 again. For the individual animal categories, the increase in sow stocks of approx. 2.5% particularly important. In the previous year, the sowing numbers had fallen to the 1 million unit mark . The hitherto high piglet prices have contributed to the fact that the number of gilts or Erstlingssauen has increased significantly . The number of pig-bearing sows is particularly high at + 4.4%. In connection with further increasing numbers of piglets per sow the piglet supply increases .The increase in juveniles is for the most part exported. This will benefit Germany and Poland in 1st line. The increase in fattening pigs by 2.4% more than compensates for the decline in the previous year. In recent years, fattening pig flocks had to retreat to accommodate piglet production with limited livestock numbers on the scarce area. Overall, pig farming in Denmark remains at a relatively constant level , because measured by environmental standards livestock units can no longer be significantly expanded. In the past, therefore, a restructuring of pig fattening to piglet production has taken priority.Sowing is less land intensive than pig farming. However, one must accept that the piglets have long transport routes abroad. At high pig prices, the transport costs are a few rins weight as at currently falling prices.
