Vietnam: ASP spreads - EU increases exports by 90%

After China, the ASP rages with full force in Vietnam - EU increases deliveries by 90% African swine fever (ASP) can no longer be stopped in the Southeast Asian region. After China, Vietnam does not get the disease under control. The coastal state has more than 2,200 outbreaks in 42 of the 63 provinces. The spread came from neighboring China in the north of the country and has spread over thousands of miles to the south. Large farms near Ho Chi Min City are under threat. According to the official figures, 1.7 million pigs are said to have died in the meantime. This corresponds to about 5% of the Vietnamese pig population of almost 35 million animals . Vietnam is the world's number one pork producer with 2.8 million tons . Brazil is still higher at 3.8 million t, while Canada is lower at 2 million t. By comparison, China used to produce 54 million tonnes, the EU is 24 million tonnes, and the United States approx. 12 million t. Pig husbandry takes place partly in approx. 10th000 commercial farms and 2.5 million backyard and mini- farms for their own use. The production structures are similar to the Chinese situation. The commercial facilities involve relevant international companies organized in a composite system from fodder production through breeding and fattening to slaughter. The traditional backyard postures provide their animals with mostly waste. The risk of infection is therefore extremely large. Vietnamese pork consumption is slightly above domestic production, so far only a few imports were necessary. About 70% of meat consumption is accounted for by pork. The per capita consumption is given as 28 kg . This is based on the determined carcass weight. It can be assumed that, given the many backyard postures, data collection is significantly less than reality. The production loss caused by the ASP has contributed to increasing imports from the EU . In the months of January to March, 23,000 tonnes have already been brought to Vietnam . As a result, EU exports rose by 90 % over the same period last year. For the whole year, the 100,000 t mark could be achieved. That would be approx. 2.5% of EU exports of pork. Ascending trend.
