MARS forecasts medium yield for grain harvest 2018 - Oilseed rape, however, weaker In its most recent May issue, the Agricultural Meteorological Institute of the EU Commission (MARS) has risked extrapolation on the expected yields for wheat on the basis of climate data analysis. According to the results, good average but regionally different earnings trends are expected. Measured against the 5-year average 2013-2017, above-average yields are expected in the west and south-east of the EU . For Italy, Germany, Poland, the United Kingdom, the Scandinavian and Baltic States, MARS estimates only average wheat yields. It stands out that from Germany starting to the east in above-average temperatures are detected. In many areas of these areas there is also a precipitation factor 1, which is a decisive factor for the only average yield level. By contrast, there has been above-average rainfall in much of the UK . This has also been observed for southeastern France and the northeastern regions of Spain . In the case of Spain, MARS estimates a + 35% increase in wheat yields compared to the catastrophic results of the previous year. The prospects for the coming weeks continue to promise only limited rainfall . This could be critical for yield once again, as the grain formation period is a key factor in determining the final yield level. For the other types of cereals , predominantly only medium yields with few regionally outstanding results are estimated. The rapeseed yields have been significantly reduced by the institute. Compared to the previous years 2013-2017, approx. 3% low yields predicted. The oilseed rape plants have suffered significantly from the strongly changing frost temperatures in February and the subsequent higher than average Celsius degrees in the following years. The focus of the expected reductions in income is seen for Germany, Italy and Spain. For a final yield assessment, it will again come on the weather development in June and during the harvest season . The risks of harvesting are not yet over.
