DBV: German grain harvest below multi-year average. In its most recent estimate, the German Farmers Association (DBV) has estimated the German grain harvest at just under 47 million t . This is the harvest amount rd . 2.3% lower than the 5-year average. With the acreage almost unchanged , the low yield per acre is largely responsible for the result. Each hectare is missing approx. 1.5 dt to the average. The DBV sees the cause of the depressed yield level in the after-effects of the drought of the previous year with adverse consequences for late sowing and incomplete field emergence. Although the cool May had a positive effect on abundant rainfall, the groundwater supplies are still scarce. In recent years, the heat wave has had a negative impact on grain formation, especially in the less water- retaining locations. For the individual cereals, wheat scored particularly well with 4.8% n and maize with 6.6% crop reduction. Even the rye , which is usually grown on the weak sites, is expected to deliver a 6% lower harvest. Winter barley , on the other hand, is expected to grow by 8 %, largely due to the increased acreage . This also applies to spring barley with an 11.5% higher harvest , for which the DBV assumes even higher yield per hectare . For the late maturing cereals, there is still a high risk of weather during the grain formation phase in the remaining weeks. The months of July and August are of crucial importance for maize . The current high temperatures with insufficient precipitation slow down growth. Total failures on unfavorable locations are no longer impossible.
