MARS: EU yields higher than expected - maize, turnips, potatoes above average With the help of the latest climatic data , the agricultural commission of the EU Commission (MARS) With the crops already harvested, only small corrections are made. In the case of wheat , the result is higher than in the 5-year average, while barley figures are weaker. The overall grain yield is average. The remaining crops for corn, potatoes, sugar beet etc.were estimated to be above the five-year average under the improved weather conditions of the months of August and September . The weather conditions in the EU were different in the various subregions. Drought has led to substantial reductions in Spain, Portugal and Italy . Barley, wheat and not least maize were particularly affected. Unusually high temperatures were observed in the South-East European regions . Depending on the water retention capacity of the soils, the yields must be assessed differently. In some regions, such as the Czech Republic and Slovakia , the scarce rainfall conditions only yielded significantly lower than average yields. On the other hand, maize yields were again able to improve significantly in Romania and Bulgaria . The devastating harvest of the previous year in France has not been repeated this year. The results are in good midfield and will be even above average for maize. Germany is in the tight midfield of his grain harvest. On the other hand, Poland can boast above-average results. Sufficient rainfall has resulted in high yields. High expectations are placed on potato and sugar beet harvesting .The fertile precipitation in the past weeks and months has significantly improved the yield prospects. Overall, the EU crop in 2017 remains in the middle of the range, with a low 300 million tonnes .
