uni-2022: MARS cuts EU grain yields to 5-year average In the June 2022 issue, the EU Commission's Agrometeorological Institute (MARS) reduced the yield estimates from the previous month by -1.4%. The basis is the unfavorable climate data from May to June 17, 2022. There was insufficient rain in large parts of Europe and above-average temperatures in the south-western regions. The yields are therefore estimated to be lower. However, the average grain yields of an estimated 5.5 t/ha still reach the 5-year average. The weather-related impairments had different effects on the individual fruits . Wheat and rye were hit the hardest, with expected yield declines of 2.3% and 2.4%, respectively. Even winter barley does not quite reach the 5-year average.MARS reduced the rapeseed yields by -1.6% compared to the previous month's estimate, but the result is still above the 5-year average at 3.12 t/ha or +1.4%. The corn yields are still subject to the weather conditions in the yield-forming phase of the next few months. Significantly greater ranges of fluctuation can be observed in the individual growing regions . Portugal and Spain are badly affected with a drop in yield of -19 to -17% compared to the previous month's estimate. The northern regions of Italy and the southern parts of France also experienced the hot spell. At -20%, the drop in yields in Romania is particularly serious. In Bulgaria and Hungary , the results are still comparatively mild at -11% each. Too little rain and above-average temperatures are the main reasons. On the other hand, the cool temperatures in Finland and the Baltic States have resulted in higher yield expectations of between 11 and 16%.
