MARS estimates yields per hectare as in previous month, but above 5-year level
In its latest May 24 issue, the EU Commission's Agrometeorological Institute (MARS) has forecast the expected yields per hectare in the EU countries based on the evaluation of climate data. The individual results are presented in detail in a 50-page brochure with many graphics and images.
The weather conditions in the individual growing regions were very different. In Spain and Portugal, sufficient precipitation has fallen in the last two months, so that significantly more favorable yields are expected.
In contrast, in parts of France, the Benelux countries, the UK and Denmark, sowing was severely delayed by high water levels; yield losses are expected. This also applies to the PO level of northern Italy.
In contrast, southern Italy, Turkey and central Poland are struggling with rainfall deficits; accordingly, yield prospects are estimated to be low. This also applies to large parts of European Russia (Southern District), the main grain production area.
Frost damage has been recorded in southern Sweden, parts of northern Russia and in south-western areas of Germany.
Overall, the Institute concludes that, on average, yields per hectare are roughly at the previous month's level. Compared to the 5-year average, however, yields are expected to be 1 to 5 % higher, depending on the regional focus of crop cultivation.
The EU-KOM will provide a preview of the harvest results at the end of the month. In addition to the MARS yield estimates, the areas under cultivation are also included.
