MARS increases yield prospects for EU harvests In its May issue, the Agrometeorological Institute of the EU Commission (MARS) predicts higher winter grain yields for the 2021 harvest . The basis is the evaluations of the current climate data, which are closely related to area yields. This is backed by long-term research results. During the period under review, large parts of Europe were affected by strong cold spells in 3 waves. The focus was on the regions in the north, northwest, center and east . The low temperatures caused delays in plant growth. There was also damage to the rapeseed flowers, but they have regenerated. The summer crops came into the ground late. There was only a few lack of rain in small rooms, which, however, had no significant impact on the development of yield. In most regions, high amounts of precipitation have fallen, which have replenished the urgently needed water supply in the soil. In recent times, the alternating cool and warm temperatures have led to an improvement in the plant population. In the process, pests appeared to a much lesser extent. The earnings prospects have improved significantly, particularly in France, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary and other countries in southern Central Europe . The EU average grain yields are expected to be + 4.2% above the 5-year average . Common wheat is estimated to have increased by + 3.9% and winter barley is estimated to have increased by 5.9% . The Baltic states will see above-average growth. Finland, Poland and especially France predicted.Significantly falling yields are expected for Austria, Slovakia and Portugal. Rye is expected to deliver + 5.9% higher yields, with Germany expected to achieve the highest increase with + 9.3%. Triticale only creates + 2.5%. Grain maize only achieved an increase of 0.8 %. The rapeseed yield is expected to increase by + 5.2% . An increase of 15% to 38.1 dt / ha is forecast for Germany. High yield increases of 7 to 8% are also expected for Belgium and Poland. For Z. beets , only +1.8% more yield is expected on average. Increases of over 7% are estimated for the Netherlands, Romania, Hungary and Finland. Heavy losses are expected in Poland, Lithuania in Italy. An increase of 4.9% is predicted for Germany. For potatoes , MARS estimates an increase of 3.7% . Belgium stands out with + 12% and Portugal with + 10% . For Morocco , wheat and barley yields are expected to be 33% higher. The government has reacted to possible price-disruptive imports with protective tariffs of 170%.
