The international grain market was split in two in the first week of June: While wheat prices fluctuated between geopolitical uncertainty and good harvest prospects in search of impetus, maize prices remained under pressure - with few attempts at recovery.
US wheat continues to benefit from the weak dollar, which makes it competitive on the global market. At the same time, however, good growing conditions in the USA are dampening price expectations. In the meantime, the escalation in the Ukraine war led to price increases, as market participants feared possible disruptions in Black Sea trade. However, by the middle of the week, the fundamentals were already dominating again: The winter wheat harvest in the US has begun and the USDA surprisingly upgraded stock assessments.
The corn market was predominantly weak. The good weather conditions in the US Corn Belt raise hopes of a bumper harvest, which is weighing on prices. Although export demand has remained robust recently and ethanol consumption is also at a high level, the prospect of full silos is slowing down price development. Ukraine also provided additional talking points on the maize market. In the negative scenario, the Ukrainian Ministry of Agriculture expects a harvest of just 26 million tons - well below the current USDA forecast of 30 million tons. In addition to the war, unfavorable crop developments are also playing a role.
Overall, the mood on the grain markets remains subdued. The good supply situation is currently overshadowing geopolitical risks - but new impulses, such as changes in the weather or political developments, could cause movement at any time.
ZMP Live Expert Opinion
The markets for wheat and corn are caught between good yield prospects in the northern hemisphere, robust export demand and geopolitical risks. The focus is increasingly on the progress of the harvest and weather developments. Price trends in the coming days are likely to depend on whether the situation in Ukraine escalates and how strongly Russia reacts to the latest events. It also remains to be seen whether the rapprochement between China and the USA will bear lasting fruit.
