MARS in Apr.2025: corrected EU yield forecasts for Mar.-25
In its April edition, the EU Commission's Agrometeorological Institute (MARS) has updated the monthly EU yield forecasts based on climate data evaluation. A 1st preliminary partial estimate was made in March 2025.
The current forecasts assume an average grain yield of 5.46 t/ha. This is around 5 % above the 5-year average.
For wheat, the yield expectations are also 5 % above the 5-year average due to the weather development to date. Compared to the March forecast, the current forecast is 1% higher. However, the March forecast for durum wheat has been revised downwards in the affected production areas.
In contrast, barley yields are expected to trend higher with an EU average of 5.08 t/ha. MARS also estimates slightly higher yields per hectare for rye and triticale. However, the level remains only slightly above the multi-year average.
In the case of rapeseed yields, the March estimate of 3.2 t/ha is maintained.
The climate data show a precipitation deficit in large production areas of the EU compared to the long-term average. The area stretches from north-western France to Germany, Poland and the Baltic states. In Bulgaria and Romania, weather-related sowing delays were recorded. In the western and southern EU countries, the climate data was within the long-term average range.
The further development of the weather in the coming months will once again be decisive for yield formation. The Institute continuously records the climate data and evaluates it monthly with the help of relevant PC-supported statistics programs. The results are published monthly and updated as soon as possible.
