FAO updates world grain production 2025-26 - minor changes compared to previous month
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has updated world grain production in its latest May 25 report. The adjustments due to weather-related developments were only minor overall, but with regional differences.
Global wheat production is estimated at 795 million tons, the same level as the previous year.
In Europe, a slightly higher wheat harvest is expected with some differences. However, there is still a downside risk in the northern regions due to drought.
A smaller harvest of around 80 million tons is expected for Russia. In Ukraine, the recent rainfall has improved yield prospects, but the reduced acreage means that only a below-average production volume can be expected.
In Canada, the main sowing of spring wheat is in full swing. The harvest is expected to be on a par with the previous year.
Due to the drought, the US wheat harvest is estimated to be below last year's level.
In India, a record wheat harvest is expected despite difficult climatic conditions in some regions. In Pakistan, an increase in the area under cultivation is supporting hopes of a result above the five-year average.
In North Africa, the outlook is mixed: In Morocco, the harvest will be below average due to drought. Algeria expects an average result. In the irrigated areas of Tunisia and Egypt, expectations are trending slightly upwards.
In Argentina, the wheat harvest is no longer considered to be quite so unfavorable due to the recent rainfall. In Australia, the harvest is expected to be just under 30 million tons, a level below last year's high result.
The coarse grain harvest, with a focus on maize, has begun in the southern hemisphere. Total maize production in Brazil in 2025 will be higher than the previous year and the 5-year average. In Argentina, a smaller area under cultivation and below-average yield expectations will result in a smaller harvest volume. Favorable weather in South Africa leads us to expect a harvest above the previous year's level.
In the northern hemisphere, maize sowing is in the early stages. According to surveys, the area under cultivation in the USA , the world's largest production region, is expected to be 5 % higher.
