The grain harvest in Ukraine is in full swing. According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Agriculture, 82% of the barley area has already been threshed. The yield per hectare is estimated at a good average of 25 dt/ha of still uncleaned goods. Around 25% of the winter wheat has been harvested. Yields are reported at a weak 26.1 dt/ha, presumably as a result of the early harvest date in the SE of the country.
The pea crop is 33% harvested, with an average yield of 12.6 dt/ha. Winter oilseed rape yielded 16.6 dt/ha.
The harvest of rye and spring barley has only just begun.
An initial conclusion can already be drawn. The winter barley harvest can be classified as above average, while the wheat yields are largely disappointing. This could be explained by the fact that the drought in May did not affect the earlier maturing barley very much, while the wheat was still in the yield-forming phase of grain filling.
A possible improvement in the wheat harvest results cannot be ruled out when the areas not affected by the drought start harvesting.
The renewed onset of drought in July could still cause problems for maize, which accounts for a good half of the Ukrainian harvest.
