Slaughter pig market in Germany

ASF: As of July 9, 2024, 5,784 ASF-infected wild boars have been detected in Brandenburg, Saxony and Mecklenburg. In the meantime, 11 ASF-infected wild boars have been found around Groß-Gerau (northwest of Darmstadt in Hesse). The new cases cross the state border into Rhineland-Palatinate. For the first time, a farm with 7 domestic pigs was culled due to suspected ASF.

Market and price developments in selected competitor countries:

In Denmark , the comparably calculated prices remained unchanged at € 1.74/kg in CW 28, 2024.

In Belgium, the comparably calculated prices of €2.01/kg were reduced by -9 ct/kg in CW 28, 2024.

In the Netherlands , prices will be reduced by -10 ct/kg in CW 28, 2024 with comparable prices of €2.03/kg.

In France/Brittany , prices have risen by +5 ct/kg to €2.12/kg . Slaughter numbers continue to fall to 337,913; slaughter weights are at 95.72 kg.

In Italy, prices rose by +1 ct/kg in week 28, 2024. Meat sales are receiving initial impetus from rising numbers of holidaymakers.

In Spain, the unchanged price of €2.41/kg in week 28, 2024 reflects the short supply of live animals. Live supply remains low. The start of the vacation season is boosting domestic sales, while the high price level is slowing down exports.

In the USA/IOWA , producer prices have stabilized at € 1.85/kg. Slaughter figures are still slightly lower. Stocks in cold stores are tight. Cut prices have mostly risen again. Market prices for the summer barbecue season are quoted at current levels. However, the forward prices for Dec. 24 only average €1.60/kg.

Brazil: Producer prices have risen to an average of €1.64/kg due to currency effects. Rising domestic prices and a stronger exchange rate contributed to this. Flood-related restrictions are increasingly receding into the background. Exports are on the rise again.

China: Prices have fallen to €3.09/kg. Reduced supply continues to meet seasonally strong demand. The month of Nov-2024 is being traded on the Dalian exchange at prices of around €3.05/kg. Prices are expected to fall to just under €3/kg in Jan-2025.

Conclusion: Despite low live supply and limited cold storage stocks, the impetus provided by the barbecue season and the European Football Championship has not been enough to improve prices. The start of the main holiday season is reducing demand volumes and keeping prices under pressure.

ZMP Live Expert Opinion

Expectations of rising prices as a result of sales-stimulating impulses from the barbecue season and the European Football Championship have not been fulfilled despite limited live supply and tight cold store stocks. The start of the vacation season is slowing demand and putting pressure on prices.
