Slaughter pig market in Germany

ASF: As of May 17, 2024, 5,702 ASF-infected wild boars have been detected in Brandenburg, Saxony and Mecklenburg. In Apr 2024, 21 cases have been reported.

Market and price development in selected competitor countries:

In Denmark , the comparably calculated prices remained unchanged at €1.77/kg in CW 21, 2024.

In Belgium, the comparably calculated prices of €2.10/kg were raised slightly in week 21, 2024.

In the Netherlands , prices will be +1 ct/kg higher in week 21 of 2024 with comparable prices of €2.09/kg.

In France/Brittany , prices have remained unchanged at €2.00/kg . Slaughter numbers have risen again to 369,081.

In Italy, prices were reduced again by -3.5 ct/kg in week 21, 2024. The spread of ASF in northern Italy is unsettling the markets. Customers are holding back.

In Spain, prices will remain unchanged at a comparable €2.35/kg in week 21, 2024. Although slaughter capacities are not fully utilized, meat sales are difficult.

In the USA/IOWA , producer prices have fallen to the current €1.75/kg. Slaughter numbers have risen significantly. However, cut prices remain firm. The high price level achieved is slowing sales at home and abroad. Slightly reduced market prices of €2.12/kg are being traded for the summer barbecue season.Forward prices for Oct.24 are only averaging €1.80/kg.

Brazil: Producer prices have risen to an average of €1.60/kg. Regional differences have widened. Flooding in Rio Grande do Sul is hampering slaughterhouses in their procurement and sales business. Almost 15,000 pigs have died.

China: Prices have stabilized further at € 2.63/kg. The declining supply as a result of the previous destocking is taking pressure off the market. Prices for the month of Sep-2024 are already trading at €3.15/kg on the Dalian exchange. This price level is expected to continue into Jan-2025. The systematically reduced supply meets a seasonally typical increase in demand.

Conclusion: Despite the persistently limited supply and increasing demand for barbecue, it has not yet been possible to push through price increases. Slaughterhouses argue that there is insufficient demand for meat and margins are too low in view of the increased costs.

ZMP Live Expert Opinion

Despite the persistently low live supply and increasing barbecue activities, prices cannot be increased because demand for meat is limited and high cost increases have reduced margins in the subsequent sales business.
