Slaughter pig market in Germany

ASF: As of Aug. 5, 2024, 5,899 ASF-infected wild boars have been detected in Brandenburg, Saxony, Mecklenburg and Hesse. Around Groß-Gerau (northwest of Darmstadt in Hesse), 79 ASF-infected wild boars have now been found. The new cases cross the state border into Rhineland-Palatinate. ASF was detected on 5 farms with domestic pigs in herds of 1,100, 170, 17 and most recently 1,800 animals and the herds were culled.

Market and price developments in selected competitor countries:

In Denmark , prices calculated on a comparable basis remained unchanged at €1.68/kg in CW 32, 2024.

In Belgium, the comparably calculated prices of €2.01/kg remained unchanged in CW 32, 2024.

In the Netherlands , the quotes in week 32 of 2024 have been reduced by -3 ct/kg with comparable prices of €2.00/kg.

In France/Brittany , prices have been reduced by -6 ct/kg to €2.06/kg . Slaughter numbers are down to 337,729; slaughter weights are down at 95.60 kg.

In Italy, prices rose by a further +4 ct/kg in week 32, 2024. Rising numbers of holidaymakers increase demand for meat. ASF cases reduce supply.

In Spain, the unchanged price of €2.41/kg in week 32, 2024 reflects the short supply of live animals. The vacation season ensures increased domestic sales, while the high price level slows down exports with a self-sufficiency rate of around 200%.

In the USA/IOWA , producer prices have stabilized at € 1.74/kg. Slaughter figures are back to average seasonal levels. Cold store stocks remain low. Cut prices, particularly for barbecue products, have risen again. Market prices for the summer barbecue season are quoted at current levels. However, the forward prices for Dec. 24 are only at an average of €1.59/kg.

Brazil: Producer prices have fallen to a converted €1.63/kg due to currency effects. The live supply is just sufficient to meet domestic demand and export volumes.

China: Prices have risen further to €3.23/kg. The reduced supply meets a seasonal increase in demand. The month of Nov-2024 is being traded on the Dalian exchange at prices of around €3.06/kg. In March 2025, prices of €2.55/kg are traded.

Conclusion: As expected, average prices have fallen to €2.00/kg. With little change in live supply, weak holiday-related demand is the main reason for the crumbling price level.

ZMP Live Expert Opinion

The holiday-related weak demand in the food retail sector and at processing plants due to company vacations has pushed prices down. The reduced slaughter numbers are still more than sufficient. No significant change is expected before the end of the vacation season.
