In the USA/IOWA , producer prices have fallen back to the current €1.81/kg. Slaughter numbers are back to average and cut prices remain largely stable. Cold store stocks are tight. Market prices of € 2.14/kg are being traded for the summer barbecue season. However, fall/winter prices are back to an average of € 1.75/kg.
Brazil: Producer prices have been reduced to an average of €1.52/kg. Demand from the processing sector leaves much to be desired. There is still little support from the export business. However, sales figures are expected to rise in 2024 while prices remain high.
China: Prices have stabilized again at €2.61/kg. The usual seasonal weakness in demand remains for the time being. Prices for the month of May 2024 are trading at €2.60/kg on the Dalian exchange. The most recently calculated sow herd amounts to 40.6 million tons, which is still far from the political target of 39 million in a range of 92 to 105%.
Conclusion: With a few exceptions, pig prices in most EU countries have remained at the increased price level. Low slaughter numbers, low pre-registrations, small cold store stocks, the start of stockpiling for the barbecue season and stable demand are ensuring firm pig prices. However, the tough meat sales business means that there is hardly any room for upward price movement.
