Slaughter pig market in Germany

ASF: As of May 28, 2024, 5,706 ASF-infected wild boars have been detected in Brandenburg, Saxony and Mecklenburg. In Apr 2024, 21 cases have been reported.

Market and price development in selected competitor countries:

In Denmark , the comparably calculated prices remained unchanged at €1.77/kg in CW 22, 2024.

In Belgium, the comparably calculated prices of €2.10/kg remained unchanged in CW 22, 2024.

In the Netherlands , prices in week 22 of 2024 will be 31 ct/kg higher at comparable prices of €2.12/kg.

In France/Brittany , prices remained unchanged at €2.00/kg . Slaughter numbers fell to 307,250 due to the public holiday; slaughter weights are at 96.91 kg.

In Italy, prices were reduced again by -3 ct/kg in week 22, 2024. The increasing ASF epidemic is still deterring buyers.

In Spain, prices will remain unchanged at a comparable €2.35/kg in week 22, 2024. Although slaughter capacities are not fully utilized, meat sales are difficult.

In the USA/IOWA , producer prices have fallen to the current €1.80/kg. Slaughter numbers have fallen due to public holidays. However, cut prices remain firm. The high price level reached is hampering sales at home and abroad. Market prices of €2.14/kg are being traded for the summer barbecue season.Forward prices for Dec. 24 only average €1.65/kg.

Brazil: Producer prices have fallen to an average of €1.53/kg. Flooding in Rio Grande do Sul is hampering slaughterhouses in their procurement and sales business. Almost 15,000 pigs have died.

China: Prices have stabilized further at € 2.63/kg. The declining supply as a result of the previous destocking is taking pressure off the market. Prices for the month of Sep-2024 are already trading at €3.15/kg on the Dalian exchange. This price level is expected to continue into Jan-2025. The systematically reduced supply meets a seasonally typical increase in demand.

Conclusion: The reduced live supply and low cold store stocks are still sufficient to meet the demand for meat at constant prices. Nevertheless, it is expected that price increases will be possible in the near future in view of increasing barbecue activities and the European Football Championship.

ZMP Live Expert Opinion

Despite disappointing price trends to date, expectations of price increases in the near future remain high. Full slaughter weeks, increasing barbecue activities and the European Football Championship should provide the necessary boost to demand.
