In Italy, prices remained unchanged again in week 27, 2024. Meat sales remain subdued for the time being. Larger vacation flows should ensure more sales in the near future.
In Spain, a further increase to € 2.41/kg in week 27, 2024 reflects the scarce live supply. High temperatures reduce slaughter numbers and weights. Capacities are not fully utilized, but the approaching vacation season could ensure more movement.
In the USA/IOWA , producer prices have risen sharply to €1.86/kg. Slaughter figures are at a reduced level. Stocks in cold stores are just about sufficient. However, cut prices have fallen. Market prices for the summer barbecue season are still quoted at current levels. However, the forward prices for Dec. 24 are only at an average of €1.58/kg.
Brazil: Producer prices have fallen to an average of €1.52/kg due to currency effects. In local currency, prices remained the same. Flood-related production losses have been partially overcome. Hopes are once again focused on growing exports.
China: Prices have stabilized at € 3.16/kg. The previous reduction in stocks is leading to lower supply coupled with seasonally high demand. The month of Nov-2024 is being traded on the Dalian exchange at prices of around €3.10/kg. Prices are expected to fall to just under €3/kg in Jan-2025.
Conclusion: Hopes for rising prices have not yet been fulfilled. Barbecue weather and the European Football Championship have not provided the expected demand impetus. The approaching main holiday season will tend to restrict demand and put pressure on prices.
