Slaughter pig market in Germany

ASF: As of May 28, 2024, 5,706 ASF-infected wild boars have been detected in Brandenburg, Saxony and Mecklenburg. In Apr 2024, 21 cases have been reported.

Market and price trends in selected competitor countries:

In Denmark , the comparably calculated prices remained unchanged at €1.77/kg in CW 23, 2024.

In Belgium, the comparably calculated prices of €2.10/kg remained unchanged in CW 23, 2024.

In the Netherlands , prices in week 23 of 2024 remained unchanged at comparable prices of €2.12/kg.

In France/Brittany , prices have not changed at €2.00/kg . Slaughter numbers have risen again to 364,930; slaughter weights are at 96.82 kg.

In Italy, prices remained unchanged in week 23 of 2024 following the reductions in previous weeks. The ASF epidemic is still restricting market activity.

In Spain, prices will remain unchanged at a comparable €2.35/kg in week 23, 2024. Although slaughter capacities are not fully utilized, meat sales remain difficult in view of the high prices.

In the USA/IOWA , producer prices have risen to the current € 1.84/kg. Slaughter figures are back at a slightly reduced average level. However, cut prices have fallen. Stocks in cold stores have risen compared to the previous month. Market prices of €2.12/kg are being traded for the summer barbecue season. However, forward prices for Dec. 24 are only averaging €1.63/kg.

Brazil: Producer prices have fallen to an average of €1.47/kg. Floods in Rio Grande do Sul are hampering slaughterhouses in their procurement and sales business as well as processing and storage due to power outages.

China: Prices have stabilized further at € 2.67/kg. The declining supply as a result of the previous destocking is taking pressure off the market. Prices for the month of Nov-2024 are already trading at €3.12/kg on the Dalian exchange. This price level is expected to continue into Jan-2025. The systematically reduced supply meets a seasonally typical increase in demand.

Conclusion: Despite the low live supply and low cold store stocks, there is no room for upward price movement so far. Nevertheless, it is expected that price increases will be possible in the near future due to full slaughter weeks, increasing barbecue activities and the European Football Championship.

High expectations are based on future full slaughter weeks, increasing barbecue activity and demand stimuli from the European Football Championship.
