Market and price developments in selected competitor countries:
In Denmark , the comparably calculated prices of €1.58/kg will be reduced by -5 ct/kg in CW 35, 2024.
In Belgium, the comparably calculated prices of €1.95/kg will remain unchanged in CW 35, 2024.
In the Netherlands , prices will remain constant in week 35 of 2024 with comparable prices of €1.90/kg.
In France/Brittany , the comparable prices are set back by a further -6 ct/kg at €2.08/kg . Slaughter numbers have risen again to 345,000; slaughter weights are down at 95.20 kg. The school vacations have come to an end; sales have not yet picked up.
In Italy, prices rose by a further +4 ct/kg in week 35, 2024. This means that Italian pig prices have risen by a total of 23 ct/kg in 7 weeks. Demand is still coming from the vacation season. ASF cases reduce supply.
In Spain, the price is reduced by -3 ct/kg to €2. 35/kg in week 35, 2024. Although the vacation season ensures high domestic sales, the high price level slows down exports with a self-sufficiency rate of around 200 %.
In the USA/IOWA , producer prices were set -4 ct/kg lower at € 1.59/kg. The weaker dollar exchange rate contributed to this somewhat. Slaughter figures remain at the same high level. Cold store stocks are slowly increasing. Barbecue items remain firm, other cuts have fallen sharply. However, forward prices for Dec. 24 are only averaging €1.55/kg.
Brazil: Producer prices have remained at around €1.85/kg. Although domestic prices have risen, the weak exchange rate has offset the increase. The live supply is only just sufficient to meet the stable domestic demand and the brisk export business (+35 % in July/Aug.).
China: Prices have risen further to €3.54/kg. The government's deliberate reduction in supply is being met by a seasonal increase in demand. Limited import increases consist mainly of cheap by-products. The month of Nov-2024 is traded on the Dalian exchange at prices of around €2.99/kg. In Mar-2025, however, prices of only €2.55/kg are quoted. China now imports almost twice as much beef as pork.
Conclusion: In view of the price reductions in neighboring EU member states (with the exception of Italy), the stable price trend in Germany should be seen as something special. The hope remains that with the end of the holiday/vacation period, demand could be more favorable and price pressure will ease.
ZMP Live Expert Opinion
The expectation of an improvement in prices with the end of the vacation period has not yet been fulfilled. The low price signals in competing neighboring countries are putting the brakes on any price increases in this country. With live supply remaining low, prices will at least remain stable.
