EU foreign trade in pork in the first half of 2013
In the first 6 months of 2013, the EU-28 countries exported around 1.481 million tons of pork. In the same period of 2012, this figure was 1.495 million tons.
Germany and Denmark together accounted for 45% of this alone. Spain, France and Poland have an export share of just under 30%. The remaining 25% of exports are distributed among many individual countries.
Germany alone accounts for 25% of EU exports. German exports were only slightly lower in the first half of 2013.
Fresh/chilled meat and by-products each account for more than 90% of exports. Processed products only have a market share of less than 7%.
Live exports account for less than 1% of total exports. Compared to the previous year, live exports almost halved in the first half of 2013.
Exports in the 2nd half of 2013 are expected to be lower.
Who are the importing countries?
Russia, China and Hong Kong account for around 55% of EU pork exports. While Russia and Hong Kong imported less in the first half of 2013, China increased its imports all the more. South Korea almost halved its pork imports after the end of the foot-and-mouth epidemic.
Russia's imports from the EU consist of more than 60% fresh and frozen goods and 30% bacon cuts. However, around 50% of German exports consist of bacon.
