Forecast for EU pig slaughterings in 2013

Eurostat: Pig slaughterings 2013

According to the latest figures from the European Statistical Office "Eurostat", the future slaughter figures for pigs in 2013 in the EU 27 are expected to fall even more sharply than previously assumed. According to the statistics, the declines in the first two quarters of 2013 were comparatively moderate at -1.6% to -1.7%. For the third quarter, the statisticians calculate a much sharper decline of - 4.77%. The decline in the 4th quarter of 2013 was similarly strong at just under - 4.5%.

Comparisons at EU-28 level are not possible due to a lack of data, but are unlikely to change the result significantly due to the low volume of pig farming in Croatia.

An increase of 0.8% was calculated for Germany in the 1st quarter of 2013. In the 2nd quarter of 2013, pig slaughterings fell by -2.35%. Eurostat is forecasting a decline of between -4.6% and -4.9% for the 3rd and 4th quarters.

The evaluations for Spain, the 2nd largest pig farming area in the EU, showed an increase of 1.3% and 2% for the two quarters in the first half of the year. In the 3rd quarter, pig slaughterings are expected to fall by -5.8 % and in the 4th quarter by a considerable -12.8 %.

In Denmark, the third-largest pig processing region, slaughterings increased by +1.4% to +2.3% in the first half of the year and are expected to be -2% lower in the fourth quarter of 2013.

In the fourth-largest pig farming region, the Netherlands, slaughterings ranged from -0.4% to - 1.3% to +0.4% in the last quarter.

Significant reductions in pig slaughterings are forecast for Poland. Since the beginning of the year, the reductions are expected to range from -15.7% to -13% to -8.9% in the last quarter of 2013.

The figures are based on standardized projections from livestock census documents.
