At the end of November, the USA banned potato imports from Price Edward Island (PEI) because potato cancer (Synchytrium endobioticum) was discovered in the fields there for the first time in 21 years. This is a fungal disease in potatoes that has to be quarantined. 20% of Canada's potato harvest grows on the Atlantic island of PEI and the majority of it usually goes to the USA to be processed into French fries. Since the border for potato deliveries remains tight, stocks are now threatened with destruction. The PEI Minister of Agriculture reported this this week that the farmers should receive compensation, but the quantities will not be available on the market.
