Morocco: Increase in import tax brings logistics companies in distress

The largest wheat importer in Morocco the Copagri accelerates the handling of import wheat in April in the run-up to the announced increase in the import tax. However, this causes a tense situation of the liquid assets of the company. The tariff for wheat is expected to increase to 75% in may, there were 17.5% since October. The local harvest should thus be protected.
The North African country expects a record harvest of 11 million tonnes of grain, of which 5.5 million tons of wheat this season. Imports are needed to shake up the desired qualities.
There is currently a backlog at the unloading of 23 ships, ahead of Morocco's ports on roads. Of them, seven ships should be deleted by Copagri. The company has observers according to financing problems, since the Moroccan banks have already enough bad loans and are careful. Copagri imported grain approximately in the year 30% of Morocco's soft wheat and durum supplies by about 1.4 million tons. Half of it is a subsidiary of the mill group Shortt.
