60% of the Belgian potatoes show volunteers

The Belgian industry association Fiwap PCA reports that 60% of the processing varieties in Belgium show growth. To such a high degree and in such intensity, the phenomenon has never been discovered before. For the factories, this means that not only is there less raw material this year, but it is also usually of very poor quality. Growth in the past week was on average only 4.3 tonnes. 20% of the potato fields in Belgium did not grow at all. In this country, the storage of winter potatoes has already begun. Fritten factories use the harvest season to buy potatoes on the open market. At the same time you spare the contract potatoes, if they are still a bit green and can still gain in income. Dutch processors pay up to 30 € / dt for free potatoes so much that many farmers can hardly resist. These save storage costs and no longer have a quality risk. Meanwhile, despite the desolate phytosanitary situation in Poland, the Dutch and the British are ordering extra coarse potatoes and fry raw materials. This is reminiscent of 2012 when the British bought 660,000 tons of four times as many potatoes as we normally would on the continent.
