African pig fever: China can not rule out further cases

The Chinese Ministry of Agriculture states in a statement on the homepage that it can not be ruled out that there will be another outbreak of African swine fever (ASP).
The risk of transmission of African swine fever from neighboring countries is still high.
It is not clear how far the disease has spread and there is much uncertainty about how the situation will develop.
China has reported four outbreaks of highly contagious disease in four provinces in less than a month. More than 25,000 animals have been culled so far.
The virus has been present for a long time and spreads in the neighboring countries of China. The risk of transmission remains high, they said. The rapid spread of the virus to locations more than 1000 km apart could have been caused by the transport of pig products, according to a FAO senior veterinarian.
Beijing has called on local authorities to prohibit the transport of live pigs from high-risk areas for ASF and to strengthen the monitoring of live transport, the statement said.Local authorities also control farms, markets and slaughterhouses in priority areas and high-risk areas.
Since there is no vaccine or cure of the disease, one will prepare for a prolonged fight. The FAO also warned on Tuesday that the virus, which is fatal to pigs, could spread "at any time" to other countries on China's borders, including parts of Southeast Asia, where the consumption of pork is also high.
For humans, the virus is not harmful.
