Agritel: France's wheat crop in 2018 drops to 34.2 million tonnes

According to market analyst Agritel, soft wheat production in France will fall to 34.17 million tonnes this year. That is 6.5% less than last year. Strakregenereignisse in the spring would have pushed the yields.
Agritel expects an average yield of 6.92 tons of wheat per hectare. This is almost 7% less than the average yield of the past five years, when there were exceptionally large and small harvests in France in 2015 and 2016.
In contrast to the usual experience, yields in the regions with cohesive soils are lower than on sandy sites, as heavy rainfall later caused waterlogging there.
Estimates for France's grain harvest vary widely as the effects of extreme weather events make forecasting more difficult. The opinion about smaller yields is widespread.
Like other market observers, Agritel highlights the good quality of the French wheat crop. The dry and hot weather in recent weeks produced high case numbers and protein levels, two important parameters for wheat quality. The average protein value is over 12%; this is a relatively high value for France.
This estimate is based on a survey from 18 to 20 July.
