Algeria's state grain authority OAIC bought around 690,000 to 700,000 tons of milling wheat of optional origin in an international tender on Tuesday, European traders reported this morning. That was in line with the estimates made on Tuesday evening after the tender was closed.
Purchase price estimates were still at $ 372 to $ 373 per tonne c & f for large Panamax ships, to $ 376 per tonne c & f for smaller Handymax ships, also as suspected Tuesday night, traders said. More precise estimates of the quantities and prices purchased are expected later.
Traders said they did not expect wheat to be shipped from France. Algeria is France's main export customer, but Algeria again used revised quality specifications in its tender on Tuesday that favored the supply of competing wheat from the Black Sea.
Probable sources of supply could include Germany, the Baltic Sea region with possibly some supplies from Sweden, the Black Sea including Ukraine and also Argentina "but not France," said a trader.
Its last notified tender in November suggested that Algeria had purchased a significant amount of Russian wheat after Algeria changed the terms of the tender to reduce its reliance on French supplies. A total of around 700,000 - 800,000 tons of wheat were bought.
Algeria does not publish the results of its tenders and reports are based on trade estimates.
The wheat in Tuesday's tender was sought for shipping in 2022 in three time periods from the main supply regions including Europe: January 16 to 31, February 1 to 15 and February 16 to 28. If you purchase from South America or Australia, the shipment will be one month earlier.
