Algerian imports of grain durum wheat semolina and flour increased by 16% in the first four months of this year.
The North African nation is one of the largest grain importers and has attempted to limit these imports, as revenues from oil and gas exports declined and reduced States' revenues.
From January to April, the country spent $ 1.17 billion on the three agricultural commodities. A year ago, it was 1.01 billion in this period, according to the customs authority. No information was given on the imported quantities.
Algeria's own grain crop was 3.5 million tonnes in 2017, and the government in Algiers expects it to be much better this year because it rained more.
Overall, the country's food imports cost $ 3.16 billion, an increase of 4.9% yoy.
