Aridity in Argentina reduces winter wheat cultivation

A drought in northern and central Argentina affects the extent of cultivation for winter wheat. The Buenos Aires Grains Exchange yesterday had to correct its estimate of the acreage downwards for the second time because the weather conditions are bad.
The authority currently expects winter wheat acreage of 6.5 million hectares, citing farmers and grain traders. The original assumption was 6.8 million hectares.
The lack of precipitation exacerbates the water deficit in the soil. The seed that has just been applied can only develop slowly or not at all. So far, only 94.1% of the planned areas have been ordered with wheat. Winter wheat is harvested in Argentina in December and January.
According to the stock exchange, 94.6% of the corn harvest for the 2019/20 season has been harvested. The harvest estimate for this remains at 50 million tons.
