ASF: China prohibits transportation of pigs in ten regions

China has banned the transport of live pigs to 10 regions bordering provinces where highly contagious African swine fever (ASF) has broken out. According to a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of 11 September, the livestock markets in the affected regions will also be closed. The two government agencies confirmed this to the Reuters news service.
The affected areas include the provinces of Hebei, Shanxi, Jilin, Fujian, Jiangxi, Shandong, Hubei and Shaanxi, as well as the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the city of Shanghai.
African swine fever is a highly contagious disease that can not be cured and for which there is no vaccine to prevent it from spreading. It can also be transmitted through pork, animal feed or by humans.
