The demand for pigs ready for slaughter decreased in Germany last week. The reasons for this are the current shortage of Eastern European workers and the uncertainty about further sales opportunities due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, market participants expect panic sales to subside and the supply of slaughter pigs to decline again. Domestic sales have risen sharply, which can also be explained by the recent hamster purchases. Food retailers and the processing industry report very strong demand for fresh and processed meat. However, demand could subside in the short term if household supplies are replenished.
