Beijing is planning a purchase program for pork

China is likely to start a pork-buying program soon to protect farmers living in regions where African pork-fever (ASF) prices have dropped by as much as 20% since August when the disease was first reported are.
A planning group is currently working out the terms for the utility.
In China, 55 million tons of pork are consumed annually. It is not known how big the state reserves are. In the past, Beijing bought up to 100,000 tons of pork when prices were low. This is usually the case from March to May, when demand is low.
When to start now the purchase program is not known. But it will probably be before the Chinese New Year in early February 2019.
Since August, 70 outbreaks of ASF have been reported in China. There is probably also a large number of unreported cases. In the affected regions, the authorities have restricted the transport of pigs and pig products. There the prices are lowest. Some farmers now have 200 kg pigs in the barn, nearly twice as heavy as the usual carcass weight in China. In Liaoning Province, farmers are currently earning 10 yuan for one kilogram (about 1.26 kg SG). Pigs currently cost 16 yuan in the more densely populated southern provinces.
