Because it is drier than usual in the corn-growing regions of Brazil, the consultancy AgRural has lowered its harvest forecast for the second time since February.
According to this, the farmers in Center South will still harvest 66.7 million tons in the so-called second harvest, this "second harvest" follows the first crop of the year, the soybeans. This maize harvest makes up 75% of the total Brazilian harvest.
In February AgRural still assumed 69.1 million tons of corn, in March it was reduced to 67.9 million tons and now to 66.7 million tons.
There are declines in yield in all major corn growing regions such as Mato Grosso, the largest growing region in Brazil. Paraná, the second largest growing region, is expected to harvest 1.5 million tons less corn than expected.
Last year, the second harvest was significantly larger at 69.3 million tons. The total corn harvest in Brazil, i.e. the first and the second harvest together, is now estimated at 97.7 million tons. In the 2018/19 marketing year it was 100 million tons.
