British government now believes in a trade deal with the EU

UK Minister Michael Gove, who oversees the Brexit talks, said today that progress has been made with the European Union. He believes that both sides would sign a free trade agreement.
The UK left the EU on January 31, but the main conditions for its membership remain in place during a transitional period until the end of this year. During this time, both sides hope to negotiate a new free trade agreement.
"It now looks like we are making progress with the European Union," Michael Gove told reporters in Northern Ireland. "I believe there will be a successful negotiation result."
While Britain has always said a deal was possible, the tone of comments from Gove, one of the toughest Brexit supporters in Prime Minister Boris Johnson's administration, has been far more positive today than it has been in recent months.
At the end of May, for example, Gove demanded that the EU lead the talks to a dead end. If an agreement is not reached, it would shake global trade as much as the corona crisis.
The European Union is now ready to compromise by weakening its demand that the UK respect EU state aid rules in the future, diplomatic sources told Reuters earlier this month.
They said Brussels could seek a compromise that would put in place a dispute settlement mechanism if the UK plans to provide state aid to its companies in the future. So far, the EU wants to oblige the British from the start to comply with the rules of the community.
"The relationship we have with the European Union is constructive, pragmatic and impressive," said Gove, adding that he believes a deal is possible, although there is more work to be done.
Britain and the EU have further trade negotiations planned until October 2, less than two weeks before a summit when the bloc will endorse a deal with London.
