According to a land use survey published on Friday, the UK's wheat acreage is expected to increase for the 2022 crop. Favorable growth conditions and rising prices favor this.
The UK's wheat acreage is expected to be 1.81 million hectares, an increase of 1.3% from the 2021 crop, said the UK Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board, which released the results of an early bird survey today.
"An increase in the expected wheat harvest will not come as a surprise to many, given the favorable conditions in the autumn in combination with the current high UK feed wheat prices," said the AHDB.
British feed wheat prices are trading at 9-year highs due to the scarce global supply.
According to the report, the British rapeseed acreage rose by 12.9% to 345,000 hectares, also supported by the high world market prices for oilseeds.
"Given the attractive forward prices for rapeseed, many may have expected a larger area expansion ...High input prices and the ongoing flea beetle problem could limit profits in the UK growing area, "the AHDB said.
Favorable sowing conditions in autumn should reduce the area for crops grown in spring, especially barley.
The spring barley area will therefore decrease by 7.7% to 688,000 hectares.
The survey is carried out every autumn to assess national cultivation intentions. It is carried out by the Andersons Center with the help of the Association of Independent Crop Consultants (AICC) and other agronomists.
