The European Commission allows oil mills in Europe to use Canadian rapeseed (canola) for the production of biodiesel. In the EU, a strict environmental standard applies for the use of biomass as a raw material for fuel production. That told the Canadian government yesterday.
In the EU biomass for fuel production is allowed to produce at least 35% less greenhouse gases during the growing season to duck. The legislator wants to achieve that the objectives of the Paris Agreement can be met. On January 1, 2018, this emission limit even rises to 50%.
The decision of the Brussels Commission was published yesterday on its homepage. It states that Canola from Canada meets this higher standard.
Canada exported EUR 213 million canola to the European Union in 2016 to produce biodiesel.
