China is considering introducing tariffs on US soybean imports as a countermeasure to the Trump government punitive tariffs. The Asian director of the US Export Council Paul Burke said after a meeting in the US Department of Agriculture. The ministry asked for an informal meeting in Beijing, Burke told the Reuters news service by phone. The meeting with China's director Xiaoping Zhang, which took place on Monday, was attended by the US Trade Group, along with officials from the Ministry of International Relations. Burke dismissed a South China Morning Post report that the meeting of the council with the ministry was part of the official talks. Burke said he is cautiously optimistic that soybeans will not be part of the Chinese countermeasures, but the topic has not yet left the table.
China is the largest importer of soybeans worldwide and the largest consumer of US soybeans. Last year, soybeans worth more than $ 12 billion were exported to China.
