China: high meat imports

China imported 330,000 tons of pork in October, customs data show. Imports rose by 80.4% compared to October 2019. China is the world's largest consumer of meat and has great import needs due to the African swine fever, which hit the country hard.
China's pork production declined 19% in the first half after the deadly swine disease African swine fever decimated their huge swine herd over the past two years. Imports rose in the first 10 months of the year by 126.2% to 3.62 million tons, announced the General Customs Administration.
Imports in October were lower than in the previous month (380,000 tons). The recovery in Chinese deliveries pushed local prices down from very high levels. China's pig herd grew 26.9% year over year in October, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
Pork prices have fallen 28% to 36.7 yuan ($ 5.59) per kilogram since early July. However, they are still well above the values that were reached before the onset of the disease.
Beef imports in October rose year-on-year by 12.2% to 170,000 tons. The data also showed that shipments since the beginning of the year totaled 1.74 million tons.
