Beijing, Apr 17 - In the US trade dispute, China has imposed temporary punitive tariffs on American grain while signaling willingness to talk. The Ministry of Commerce in Beijing said on Tuesday, certain US companies would have to pay from Wednesday on their millet imports to China for now, a premium of almost 180 percent. An audit has revealed that China's agricultural industry is being substantially harmed by US imports dumped at dumping prices. But China is ready to expand its cooperation in the trade dispute with the United States.
The punitive tariffs are a temporary measure, the ministry said. A final decision will be made later. The special duties are a kind of "deposit" that the companies would have to pay. The penalties are significantly higher than expected by experts.
The trade dispute between the two countries continues to rock high. At the end of March, US President Donald Trump had initiated special tariffs on a large number of products from China, establishing unfair trading practices in Beijing. China had therefore announced its own punitive tariffs on US products.Trump had then refilled and announced additional duties on Chinese imports to the United States. He accuses China of dumping prices and other unfair trading practices as well as theft of intellectual property. China has accused the US of lack of agreement on the matter.
