Traders from China bought 110,000 tons of millet from the USA for delivery in the current marketing year. The USDA just announced this.
Agricultural market analysts and traders have been waiting for weeks for China to meet its import commitments for US agricultural commodities. A corresponding agreement was signed in mid-January.
The purchase of at least 100,000 tons of sorghum (millet) is a first signal. Export reports of more than 100,000 tons must be reported to the authority on a daily basis. Smaller quantities are summarized in a weekly painting. Recently it became clear that China wants to buy more sorghum.
During this marketing year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture registered millet exports to China of 473,439 tons. However, this does not include the quantities reported for the week ending February 21. Also not the quantities that are delivered to “unknown destinations”, which are probably also intended for China.
In the previous year, the United States only exported 65,000 tons of sorghum to China. In 2017/18 there were a total of 446,731 tons.
